What is a Da Vinci X® Surgical System?

Da Vinci surgical systems are comprised of three components: surgeon console, patient-side cart, and vision cart.

Surgeon console

The surgeon console is where your surgeon sits during the procedure, has a crystal-clear 3DHD view of your anatomy, and controls the instruments. The tiny instruments are “wristed” and move like a human hand but with a far greater range of motion.

Patient cart

The patient-side cart is positioned near the patient on the operating table. It is where the instruments used during the operation move in real-time in response to your surgeon’s hand movements at the surgeon console.

Vision cart

The vision cart makes communication between the components of the system possible and provides a screen for the care team to view the operation.

Benefits of da Vinci X® Robotic surgery

1. Robotic precision

2. Flexible treatments

The Da Vinci® system can assist our surgeons with various common surgical procedures:

  • Cholecystectomies
  • Hernia repairs
  • Hysterectomies
  • Gastric sleeves

3. Better patient results

  • Lower risk of infection
  • Less blood loss
  • Less trauma to surrounding healthy tissue
  • Less pain
  • Smaller scars
  • Faster recovery

4. Tested in the real world

As of 2021, surgeons have used the Da Vinci® surgical robot in more than 8.5 million procedures, and more than 6700 Da Vinci® systems are installed in hospitals worldwide.

It’s an effective option for many healthy patients who need surgery.

Improved Technology for Physicians, Better Outcomes for Patients

Thanks to robotic technology.

Cholecystectomies

What is a cholecystectomy?

A cholecystectomy is a surgery to remove your gallbladder. The gallbladder is a small organ under your liver. It is on the upper right side of your belly or abdomen. The gallbladder stores a digestive juice called bile, made in the liver.

Gallstones are small, hard pellets that can form in the gallbladder. In most people, they are small and painless.

However, in some cases, gallstones lead to gallbladder inflammation or cholecystitis. If this causes severe pain and infection, your doctor may recommend surgery to remove your gallbladder.

Surgeons using Da Vinci® technology can remove your gallbladder through a few small incisions (cuts) in your belly button using the robotic technology. During surgery, your surgeon sits at a console next to you and operates using tiny instruments.

A camera provides a high-definition, 3D magnified view inside your body. Every hand movement your surgeon makes is translated by the da Vinci system in real-time to bend and rotate the instruments precisely.

Virtually scarless gallbladder removal that reduces pain and recovery time to get you back to your life faster.

Hernia Repairs

What is a hernia repair?
A hernia repair is a surgery to fix an opening or a place of weakness in your muscle. The main types of hernia repair include:

  • Ventral hernia repair (a procedure to repair a hernia in the abdominal wall)
  • Inguinal hernia repair (a procedure to repair a hernia in the groin area)

There are two minimally invasive approaches: laparoscopic surgery and robotic-assisted surgery, possibly with Da Vinci X® technology. Surgeons perform minimally invasive laparoscopic or robotic-assisted surgeries through a few small incisions. To perform a laparoscopic hernia repair, surgeons use special long-handled tools while viewing magnified images from the laparoscope (camera) on a video screen.

Everyone is different, but in a market research study, patients reported less pain and said they experienced less disruption in their daily activities after having robotic-assisted hernia surgery compared to open and laparoscopic surgery.

Specifically:

  • Most people reported less disruption to daily activities.
  • 86% of patients reported not using pain medication 1-2 weeks later.

Hysterectomies

What is a hysterectomy?

A hysterectomy is a procedure where your uterus is surgically removed with the goal of eliminating or reducing symptoms. A benign hysterectomy is the removal of a uterus for noncancerous conditions.

Compared to traditional open surgery, a Da Vinci ® hysterectomy requires only a few tiny incisions, providing all the benefits of a minimally invasive approach – shorter hospital stays, faster recovery, less pain, blood loss, and scarring, fewer complications and a faster return to normal activities.

The robot technology also provides surgeons with highly controlled surgical instruments that offer the precision and flexibility needed to perform complex, delicate hysterectomies – procedures that can be difficult or impossible with traditional laparoscopic surgery instruments.

A Da Vinci® hysterectomy enables women with complex conditions – who might otherwise have required open surgery – to have a minimally invasive procedure.

Gastric Sleeves

What is a gastric sleeve?

Gastric sleeve is a surgical procedure designed to limit the amount of food you can eat. While it is meant to be permanent, gastric bypass can be reversed.

While the Da Vinci® Robot-Assisted approach is not right for everyone, it is an option for many candidates for weight loss surgery. Robot-assisted procedures are faster and have a lower risk of complications. The Da Vinci® Robot also gives your surgeon superior maneuverability and vision of the surgical field.

The Da Vinci® System features a magnified 3D high-definition vision system and special wristed instruments that bend and rotate far greater than the human wrist. Da Vinci® enables your doctor to operate with enhanced vision, dexterity, and control.

Potential benefits of robotic-assisted weight loss surgery may include:

  • Less pain
  • Decrease in blood loss
  • Less scarring
  • Fewer complications
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Shorter recovery time
  • Faster return to normal daily activities
  • Better clinical outcome

Your Surgeon in Control

The Da Vinci X® surgical system gives your surgeon an advanced set of instruments to perform robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery. The term “robotic” often misleads people. Robots don’t perform surgery. Your surgeon performs surgery with Da Vinci X® by using instruments that he or she guides via a console. The Da Vinci X® system translates your surgeon’s hand movements at the console in real time, bending and rotating the instruments while performing the procedure. The tiny wristed instruments move like a human hand but with a greater range of motion. The Da Vinci X® vision system also delivers highly magnified, 3D high-definition views of the surgical area. The instrument size allows surgeons to operate through one or a few small incisions.

Enhancing your surgeon’s capabilities

Doctors use many technologies that enhance their capabilities beyond what the human body allows. MRI and CT scanners, for example, enable doctors to “see” inside the body. Similarly, many surgeons perform robotic-assisted surgery using a da Vinci system because it extends the capabilities of their eyes and hands. The skilled surgeons of Texa Surgical Center use the Da Vinci X® to assist with Cholecystectomies, Hernia repairs, Hysterectomies, and Gastric sleeves.
